How To Find A Wedding Dress For Your Body Type

On your big day you want to look beautiful and it all starts with choosing the right dress. As Brand Ambassador for Alfred Angelo, I use my styling background and share essential tips for the bride-to-be and her bridesmaids! Check out my last post on how to wear your bridesmaid’s dress in real life. No need to throw away after the wedding!

Today, lets talk about how to find the right wedding dress for your unique body type. We all come in different shapes and sizes so you need to know what’s going to flatter your beautiful frame! I’ll show you some quick tips using my model friends, Liz + Ni’ma! Plus, there’s a fun video below! And of course, we taped this segment at one of my fave bridal spots in NYC: RK Bridal.

Liz – Hour Glass Shape

For Liz, the key was celebrating her fabulous curves while toning things down in the bust area. To do this, I chose a chic mermaid Alfred Angelo gown and this silhouette skimmed her hips while ending in a super flattering mermaid shape. I made sure her dress had a supportive top, while still being sexy. If you have a large bust, you want to steer clear of a strapless dress or you’ll spend all night struggling not to spill out.

Hour Glass Styling Tips

-pick a flattering mermaid, sheath or ball gown style

-keep the girls in place with a sturdy but sexy halter or traditional strap (as seen on Liz)

Ni’ma: Petite, Rectangle Shape

Ni’ma is petite with a straight, rectangle build, so I chose an Alfred Angelo A-line ball gown that gave her some womanly curves! She loves vintage so I accessorized the look with an elegant-meets-edgy headpiece!

Petite/Rectangle Styling Tips

-pick a dress that creates the illusion of curves, like an a-line or empire

Here’s some more style tidbits!

Plus Size Styling Tips

-choose the right material: fabrics that is easily ruched (ribbed, creased, folded, pleated or laced) such as silk duponi, satin and taffeta conceal imperfections

-stay away from beaded and appliqued details that enhance heavier spots

-find the right skirt: full skirts + a-line will elongate your midriff and flow away from your hips
